Foods I Stopped Buying at the Store (Why Homemade Is Better)

When I first moved to the United States, one of the biggest surprises for me was the food. Many everyday staples tasted very different from what I grew up with. The bread was soft and sweet instead of crusty and flavorful. Salad dressings tasted artificial. Even simple desserts often felt overly sweet and heavily processed.
I come from a place where we didn’t always have a lot, but most food was fresh, local, and made from ingredients you could easily recognize. I still remember the shock of reading the ingredient list on a loaf of white bread at the grocery store. Instead of five simple ingredients, there were twenty-five.
At the time I had a three-year-old child, and I simply couldn’t imagine feeding my family food that felt so processed. So I started making many of these foods at home instead.
Bread was the first thing I learned to master. Although, it took some practice to adjust to American flour. Over time I added more and more homemade staples to my kitchen—mayonnaise, sauces, dressings, desserts, spice blends, and even breakfast foods.
Today, there are many foods I simply don’t buy at the store anymore because the homemade versions taste better, use simpler ingredients, and are often surprisingly easy to make.
In this article, I’m sharing the foods I stopped buying at the store and now make at home instead.
Here are some of the foods I stopped buying at the store once I learned how simple and delicious the homemade versions can be.
1. Bread I Stopped Buying
Bread was the first thing I truly mastered in my kitchen. Once I learned how to bake it properly, I completely stopped buying bread from the store. I’ve been baking my own bread for more than 15 years, and if I don’t have time to make it, I simply go without.
Over the years I’ve added many different types of homemade bread to my routine—from everyday sandwich loaves to focaccia, bagels, soft pretzels, rolls, and even hot dog buns.
- White bread – most often I bake this crusty round bread or this bread made with milk.
- Whole wheat bread – when I want a healthier bread I bake my whole wheat bread.
- Focaccia – I recently started baking my own focaccia and I can’t believe how easy it is to prepare.
- Bagels – my husband loves bagels and often requests them for breakfast. They are so good.
- Bread rolls – I bake several types of bread rolls, but my air fryer bread rolls are a staple at my home.
- Pretzels – you will understand why I stopped buying the pretzel bites from the mall if you try my pretzel bite recipe.
- Hot dog buns – homemade hot dog buns are fresh, flavorful, and easy to customize in shape and size. Once you try making your own, you’ll never go back to the plastic bag kind again.

2. Breakfast Foods I Prefer Homemade
Breakfast is another category where homemade options easily replace store-bought ones. Many popular breakfast foods like muffins, granola, crepes, wraps, and even doughnuts can be made ahead of time and stored for several days. That makes them just as convenient as grabbing something from the store—but with better flavor and simple ingredients.
- Muffins – have you ever looked at the ingredient list of the store-bought muffin? It is so full of artificial flavors, cocols and preservatives. I would always prefer making my own than buying.
- Waffles – frozen waffles can’t compare to the taste of homemade fresh waffles. My favorite waffles are apple, banana and naturally pink waffles.
- Croissants – my husband says that he haven’t had a better croissants than my homemade ones and I agree. They so much better when they come warm out of the oven.
- Wraps / flatbreads – these are some of my favorite types of breads to prepare at home.
- Granola – while you can find some decent granola at the store nowadays, it is much cheaper to prepare it at home.

3. Condiments and Sauces I Make at Home
Condiments were some of the first foods I stopped buying after moving to the United States. Many store-bought sauces and dressings tasted overly sweet or artificial to me, and the ingredient lists were often surprisingly long. Once I learned how easy it is to make things like mayonnaise, salad dressings, pesto, and stir-fry sauces at home, I never went back. Homemade versions taste fresher, take only a few minutes to prepare, and allow you to control exactly what goes into them.
- Mayonnaise– It is a staple at my fridge. Most often I prepare plain, sriracha or chipotle mayonnaise.
- Ranch dressing – I make it every week for a dip or as a salad dressing.
- Honey Dijon dressing – It goes so well with my Southern salad with blackened shrimp.
- Creamy feta dressing – I serve it with my grilled pasta salad.
- Pesto – I make homemade basil, arugula, carrot top and roasted pepper pesto. They all taste delicious.
- Teriyaki sauce – Most often I use it to make salmon and chicken teriyaki bowls at home.
- Alfredo sauce – The bottled Alfredo sauce is shelf stable, therefore is filled with preservatives. Homemade is made from simple, clean ingredients. It tastes so much better.

4. Spice Blends I Make Myself
Another simple switch was making my own spice blends. Store-bought seasoning mixes often contain unnecessary additives, anti-caking agents, or a lot of salt. When you mix them yourself, you can adjust the flavors exactly to your taste and keep a small jar ready whenever you need it. Most blends take only a minute to measure and mix.
- Blackening seasoning – I like to use this spice blend on different proteins. Most often I use it for shrimp, chicken and ribs.
- Fajita seasoning – it takes less than 5 minutes to prepare and it tastes so much better than store-bought.
- Quesadilla seasoning – I use it all the time when I prepare my mushroom or chicken quesadillas.

5. Dips and Spreads I Stopped Buying
Homemade dips and spreads are one of the easiest ways to upgrade everyday meals and snacks. Whether it’s hummus or vegetable-based spreads made from roasted eggplant, peppers, or zucchini, the homemade versions are brighter, fresher, and more flavorful than most store-bought options. They also pair perfectly with fresh bread, vegetables, or simple appetizers.
- Hummus – there are several hummus recipes on my website. My favorite is the smoky roasted pepper hummus. I prepare it every other week. I also love to make my pesto, beet and green goddess hummus.
- Eggplant dip – I love a roasted eggplant dip. This roasted eggplant and pepper dip is one of my favorites. I often prepare my easy eggplant dip that contains only three ingredients and Baba Ganoush.
- Roasted pepper dip – this dip contains hard boiled aggs, feta and roasted peppers. It is so good.
- Zucchini dip – a delicious dip or spread with roasted zucchini, feta and dill.

6. Desserts I Stopped Buying
Desserts are another category where homemade versions make a huge difference. Many packaged desserts rely on preservatives, artificial flavors, and excessive sweetness to extend shelf life. When you make desserts at home—from cookies and brownies to tiramisu and rice pudding—you get better flavor, better texture, and full control over the ingredients. For our family celebrations and birthdays, homemade desserts have always been the standard.
- Cookies -I love to make healthy cookies at home that are made with nuts. For my husband I often prepare these raspberry and white chocolate cookies.
- Cakes – I haven’t bought a cake from the store for more than 15 years. I always make homemade cakes for all of our birthdays and holidays.
- Cheesecake – I love to bake it for one of my closest friends. She loves my white chocolate cheesecake with a homemade strawberry syrup. I also love making no-bake cheesecakes.
- Tiramisu – my husband is extremely picky about tiramisu. He says that he hadn’t had a store bought tiramisu that tastes as good as mine. He always wants tiramisu for his birthday and I’m happy to prepare it from scratch for him. I often make strawberry and blueberry tiramisu too.
- Rice pudding – I really dislike the taste of store bought rice pudding. It is overly sweet. At home I control the sweetness level.
- Nutella – homemade hazelnut spread will never taste like Nutella, but it doesn’t contain any palm oil and sickening amounts of sugar.
