Why Homemade Rice Pudding is Better Than Store-Bought?

So, why bother making rice pudding from scratch when you can grab a cup at the store? These extra ingredients, like preservatives and artificial flavors, can’t compare to the fresh, homemade version. Plus, making your own rice pudding is far cheaper. For the price of one store-bought cup, you can make a big batch of creamy rice pudding that tastes so much better.

  • Fewer preservatives: Store-bought rice pudding often has a long list of ingredients to help it last longer on the shelf. Homemade pudding doesn’t need to be loaded with preservatives and stabilizers.
  • You control the sugar: Store-bought rice pudding is often too sweet. When you make it at home, you can adjust the sugar level to your liking.
  • Healthier options: You can even use a sugar-free sweetener. Nowadays there are many alternative sugar-free sweeteners you can use to reduce the sugar content.
  • More affordable: Making rice pudding at home is much cheaper than buying those small, single-serving cups from the store.
  • Customizable ingredients: You can make the recipe vegan by using plant-based milk (like almond, coconut, or oat milk) and adjust the recipe to fit your dietary preferences.
  • No mystery ingredients: Homemade rice pudding only has simple, natural ingredients, so you know exactly what’s in your dessert. No preservatives, chemicals, or artificial flavors.
  • Fresh and flavorful: Homemade rice pudding is always fresh and tastes better than anything you can buy at the store.
  • Customizable flavor: You can add your favorite spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or vanilla to enhance the flavor.

Serving and storing of rice pudding

Serve the rice pudding chilled and dusted with cinnamon.

Keep in mind that the rice pudding will thicken the longer it sits in the refrigerator. It may even form a slight crust on top, which is perfectly normal. I usually store my rice pudding for up to 5 days in the fridge and always serve it cold. The flavors continue to improve as it sits, making it a perfect dessert you can prepare ahead of time.
