Easy Homemade Ranch Dressing (No Buttermilk). Better than Store-Bought

Easy Homemade Ranch Dressing (No Buttermilk). Better than Store-Bought

I had never heard of ranch dressing before I moved to America. In Bulgaria, we dress salads with oil and vinegar. That’s it. The first time I tried bottled ranch, I hated it. The flavor felt heavy and artificial. I couldn’t understand why people loved it so much.

Then I went to a local restaurant where they served every appetizer with a house-made ranch dip. At first, I was hesitant to try it, because I had a horrible experience with the bottled ranch. But I’m so glad I gave it a chance. The restaurant ranch tasted fresh, creamy, and full of herbs. I wanted to dip every bite into it. That moment made me realize something simple: ranch tastes amazing when you make it fresh. So I started making my own. I adjusted the ingredients. I reduced the mayonnaise and skipped the sugar. Over time I perfected it. Now everyone who tries it asks me for the recipe. That is why I decided to share this easy homemade dressing with all of you.

How to Use This Ranch as a Dip or Dressing

This recipe works two ways. For a thick, creamy dip, use it as written. The texture stays rich and perfect for dipping vegetables, wings, or fries.

For a pourable salad dressing, add water one tablespoon at a time. Stir well after each addition until you reach your desired consistency. That’s it. No buttermilk needed. No extra ingredients. Just adjust the texture to fit your meal.

Ingredients

  • Sour cream – I use full fat sour cream for maximum creamines.
  • Mayonnaise – I make my own mayonnaise. Here is the recipe I use.
  • Yogurt – any plain yogurt will do. I prefer to use whole and homemade yogurt.
  • Garlic – pressed or finely chopped.
  • Onion Powder
  • Dill and chives – use only fresh herbs, because dry ones may change the taste of the ranch.

Why This Ranch Is Better Than Store-Bought

Most bottled ranch dressings contain:

  • Added sugar
  • Preservatives
  • Stabilizers
  • Excess mayonnaise

This homemade version uses:

  • Real sour cream
  • A balanced amount of mayonnaise
  • Plain yogurt for lightness
  • Fresh herbs
  • No sugar
  • No preservatives

You control the ingredients, the texture and the flavor. That’s why it tastes better.

Serving and Storing

Serve this easy ranch dressing as a dip or a dressing.

Use it as a thick, creamy dip for fresh vegetables, chips, or crackers. Drizzle it over salads or roasted vegetables for extra flavor. You can even use it as a simple marinade for chicken or vegetables.

Store the ranch in a food-safe container with a tight lid in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.

If you dip vegetables, chips, or crackers directly into the ranch, eat the leftovers the same day or discard them. Each time food touches the dip, it introduces bacteria that can multiply quickly and increase the risk of foodborne illness.
